Cowardice asks the question

- is it safe?
Expediency asks the question

- is it politic?
Vanity asks the question

- is it popular?
But conscience asks the question

- is it right?

And there comes a time

when one must take a position
that is neither safe,

nor politic, nor popular;
but one must take it because

it is right.

5 MORE Ways to Create a Sustainable New Year

1 Order seeds and plants EARLY.  Most places are first order, first served.  So don't wait!

Here are safe from Monsanto seed companies.  www.mothering.com

2 Design your garden.
Plant as many perennial varieties you have space for.  These, after established, provide the most food for the least amount of human energy maintenance.
3  Prepare your garden by amending a spot in your yard.  Add manure, compost, or garden soil, and then mulch heavily with straw or leaves or even a tarp.
Start a compost pile and add your kitchen scraps every day.
5 PLANT A GARDEN!

New green strawberry leaves are sprouting on the roof.  The heat from the house is warming the soil, probably stimulating the early growth.

One of my favorite Sourwood trees.

Grass sprouting on the roof.  It gets greener with every rain, but it doesn't much like the freezing temps.  All in all, it is growing in nicely.

Several days of cloudy weather and the solar power is still supporting our energy usage.  As soon as we increase solar panels, we will invest in a small refrigeration device.  Time for another experiment! We would like to aquire a top door freezer, a small size, and convert it to a fridge.
  Check out this DIY site.

Convert freezer to refrigerator

It has the how-to, the math, and comments from readers that have tried it.  A great project!
